MARCH MEETING! Jimena Golcher-Benavides! Lake Tanganyika!
March 8, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
MEETING! MARCH 8th! Presenting Jimena Golcher-Benavides! Lake Tanganyika: Expedition Underwater.
Jimena is passionate about cichlids found in both her native Costa Rica, Central America and the Rift Valley, East Africa.
For her graduate studies in biology, Jimena conducted ecological research on Amphilophus tolteca, a cichlid found only in 4.6 square mile-Nicaraguan crater lake (with crocodiles!) and then for her PhD studies moved to the University of Wyoming, where she joined Dr. Catherine Wagner Lab to study African cichlids. For the past three years, Jimena has been studying how the environment influences cichlid diversity in Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania; combining a variety of field and laboratory-based research techniques.
Throughout her talk, she will share stories, footage while SCUBA diving in the world’s deepest tropical lake and preliminary findings from her research, chat about cichlids in general and current threats to the Lake Tanganyika Ecosystem and its life.
